History Of Prince Kuhio Day
Jonah Khi Kalanianaole was a prince of the Kingdom of Hawai’i until it was toppled around 1893 by a group of merchants hailing from Europe and America. He joined the United States Congress as a representative for the Territory of Hawaii, making him the sole member of Congress to be descended from the monarchy.
Prince Kuhio was labeled as People’s Prince due to his effort to ensure the sustainability of the Hawaiian folks by empowering them. He was conceived on the date of 26th March in the year of 1871. He was 24 years old when he joined the Royalist rebellion against the new republic throughout 1895, and his education background contained reputed California and the Royal Agricultural College in England. He was eventually captured and convicted of treason.
Kuhio joined the Republican Party on September 1, 1902, and was chosen as their congressional candidate. Kuhio was eventually appointed as a Republican representative to the United States Congress, earning wins for 10 times in a row in elections! Kuhio was the first person to organize the first Hawaiian Civic Club around 1918 and helped pass the women’s suffrage legislation, and then during 1919, he submitted the first-ever Hawaii Statehood Act. In 1920, he introduced the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which was enacted in 1921 and provided homesteads for Hawaiian natives. Due to his dedicated and passionate effort to introduce a bill for recognizing Hawaii as a state, it eventually earned the title!
Kuhio passed away on January 7, 1922, and then in 1949, a holiday was established in his memory. Prince Kuhio Day is currently observed every year on March 26th, on the day of his birth.
