Spain colonized the Philippines for more than 300 years and the name of the country was done after King Philip II of Spain. During the year of 1521, Ferdinand Magellan attacked the Islands where the Philippines is and eventually claimed ownership of Spain. Magellan asked all of the indigenous leaders to surrender to Spanish dominion, but Lapu Lapu, one of the leaders refused to bow and stood firm on his resolve for freedom. Magellan attempted, however, was unable to destroy Lapu Lapu, and got slain as a result.

The Spaniards eventually acquired a footing in the Philippines when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi conducted an invasion around 1565. In 1571, they erected Intramuros, which was subsequently renamed Manila and became the country’s capital. After a period of Spanish rule, a feudal system was created, with the Spanish owning large estates and Filipinos working for them. The Philippines prospered throughout the Spanish period, and their reign was unremarkable.  Around 1764, the city was returned to the French under the conditions of the Treaty of Paris, which was agreed during 1763.

The 19th Century

 Throughout the nineteenth century, sentiments of nationalistic ideas began to emerge. In 1898, Spain and the United States began a war. On April 30, 1898, the Spanish fleet was crushed by the Americans in Manila Bay. Filipino revolutionaries took advantage of the situation and besieged Manila, declaring independence during June 12 under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo. When Aguinaldo was arrested around 1902, meanwhile, American authority seized control.

The 20th Century

During the year of1935, the Philippines became a commonwealth and semi-independent under the rule of America. As a result of the influx of American professors to the Philippines, the literacy percentage rose. During 1945, the United States guaranteed that the Philippines would be entirely independent. Japan attacked the Philippines on December 10, 1941, and took Manila. The Japanese had now taken control of the whole Philippines. American military came back to the Philippines in October 1944 and regained Manila. On July 4, 1946, the Philippines declared independence. Manuel Roxas was the country’s first president after its independence.
