History Of Peace Officers Memorial Day

Peace Officers Memorial Day was first observed during 1963, a few months following the time when President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law in October 1962. Kennedy started his declaration on the occurrences of May 1963 by saying that “law enforcement officers have played a major role” since “the commencement of this Nation.” But, contrary to popular belief, the evolution of the peace officers we have come to admire and respect presently is relatively new! Private enforcement officers were hired by wealthy individuals to protect their assets in the United States. Soon after, in the mid-1600s, public peace officers arose, first in Boston, then in New York and Philadelphia. They were mostly volunteers who served as night watchmen and flagged up misbehaving neighbors.

Boston continued to lead the way in peacekeeping, establishing the first publicly financed, systematized police department in 1838, that employed full-time peacekeepers. All major U.S. cities used to have police forces by the late 1880s, however, their priorities varied from the state – to – the state, based on the troubles that each area encountered. Law enforcement chiefs were frequently appointed by local elected figures so that regulation could be skewed in favor of the political party in power. As a consequence, President Hoover established a country-wide inquiry into law enforcement efficacy throughout 1929. It called for peace officers to apply the rules in a competent and unbiased manner, and it marked a watershed moment in the history of the officers who now defend us. It elevated the generosity of spirit that we now celebrate on May 15 every year.

How To Celebrate Peace Officers Memorial Day 2022?

Take down your American flag.

If you have a U.S. flag at home, you can lower it to half its normal height to pay homage to those fallen heroes and express your solidarity, much like the formal flags flown at The White House.

Put out a candle

Light candles on your window ledge in honor of the courageous men and women who’ve been killed or seriously injured while maintaining order and stability.

Contribute to the peace movement

Assist the family members of personnel killed in the line of duty by donating to a peace officers’ charitable organization. Discover out what you can do to help, whether it can be through time, funds, food, or clothing donation.

You can also share the celebratory manners or interesting trivia on your social media accounts with the hashtag #PeaceOfficersMemorialDay. This would be a great celebratory way to pay homage to those!
