History of Nigeria Independence Day
In 1917, the Northern and Southern Nigeria Protectorates were merged to become the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. This is the Nigeria of today, as we now understand it. The British Empire began to wane in 1950, and several African nations demanded independence. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria was given independence from Great Britain as a result, and it later became the Federation of Nigeria. With a chosen prime minister and a ceremonial head of state, a new constitution was adopted. The first President was Nnamdi Azikiwe, who had served time as Governor-General. The role of prime minister, which Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa had occupied from 1957, was kept.
The southern Cameroons merged with the Republic of Cameroon in October to become the Federal Republic of Cameroon. Around June 1961, the northern portion of the Trust Territory of the Cameroons joined the Northern area of Nigeria. Nigeria established a republic on October 1, 1963, with Azikiwe serving as its head of state. Regional pressures were brought on by racial rivalry, educational inequality, and economic imbalance. The nation was still split into three sizable geographic districts, each dominated by an ethnic group: the west by the Yoruba, the east by the Igbo, and the north by the Hausa-Fulani. To fight this, the Mid-Western region was founded in August 1963. The Western world’s order fell apart as a result of the rigged election in October 1965. In an effort to topple the federal government in January 1966, a gang of army officers killed Prime Minister Balewa and two provincial premiers.
A military administration was established by Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. Anti-Igbo riots broke out in the north when he tried to eliminate the regions and establish a unified government. The military strike made the political atmosphere worse since the army became divided across ethnic lines. Officers fought over control, and the coup’s organizers and leadership were charged with preferring Igbo dominance. After multiple efforts to protect the nation, a civil war started in July 1967. It started on 6th July and went on till 15th January of 1970.
How to Observe Nigeria Independence Day
- Dress in White and Green
To celebrate, don white and green attire. Put on the flag if you don’t have any attire with those colors.
- Throw fireworks and knockouts
Nigerians seldom fail to take advantage of the chance to let off fireworks and throw knock-outs, and they typically make a great out of it on Independence Day. Folks gather in certain areas to watch fireworks, but in others, they simply toss them into the road at random. To make sure you don’t fall prey to the fire play, you may wish to remain cautious when wandering around.
- Throw a party.
Create a party and ask friends to join you in celebrating. You can dance the day away while listening to traditional music.
4. Nigerian flags should fly everywhere.
Have you noticed or observed how, in the days leading up to October 1st, hawkers can be seen selling Nigerian flags and other products decorated in green, white, and green all over the city, particularly in Abuja? You can find Nigerian flags flown and flying around, including in locations you wouldn’t imagine to see them, from the little flapping flags flanking either side of an automobile or Keke to the enormous ones billowing in the breeze atop tall structures. Generally, Nigerians seem to overdo it when it involves waving the national flag on Independence Day.
- Prepare a genuine Nigerian dish.
Celebrate by preparing traditional Nigerian cuisine. Why not sample some of Nigeria’s delights today? There are so many available on the internet, all you have to do is simply select one and prepare it by putting your heart into it.
- Attend Organized Events and Performances
The adage used by Afrobeat artist Banky Wellington, “Ain’t no party like a Lagos party,” is true of this national holiday. The majority of clubs in cities hold Fourth of July-themed activities. Before a certain hour, certain places let women enter for free. Young people also take advantage of this chance to organize their own gatherings in their communities, bringing their pals, classmates, as well as other partygoers while reiterating that in Nigeria, any reason to celebrate is encouraged. In the old days, many malls and TV stations have indeed been renowned for hosting events for kids in their neighborhoods that allow them to participate in games, eat, and win prizes. The top comedians in the business also present comedy events.
Why Nigerian Independence Day is Important?
The largest celebration of Nigerian independence outside of Nigeria takes place in New York. Join the celebration! Many people spend the day eating customary meals with their family and friends. Prepare a traditional meal with your friends and relatives to learn about the culture. Many people also utilize this day as a day of relaxation if marches and festivities are really not your style. If attending a big celebration isn’t in your plans, taking the day off to unwind is totally appropriate.
