José Abel Otero who happened to be a bartender by profession. The famous Nobel prize-winning writer Ernest Hemmingway recommended his good friend Joe Russel to brand his newly established restaurant in West Florida as “Havana Sandwich”.
Another origin tale claims that perhaps Joe is a derivative of the popular ‘loose meat’ sandwiches which surfaced in restaurants during the 1930s. Joe supposedly a chef, mixed tomato ketchup to loose beef while working in a cafe, which later became popularized as Sloppy Joe! Hunt’s, a ketchup manufacturer, invented the ‘Manwich’ around 1969, making the sloppy Joe relatively easier to cook. The Manwich can spread the brand value of Sloppy Joe!
