National DNA Day 2022 – Monday, April 25! Deoxyribonucleic acid is also referred to as DNA. It is the fundamental building block of the human species and practically all other species. It is the molecule that all living creatures use to carry genetic code. So, it’s natural that DNA has its own celebratory day.
Since the year 2003, scientists, biologists, and genetics aficionados have gathered around April 25 to celebrate the breakthrough and exploration of DNA, as well as the scientific advances that have made development possible. National DNA Day, which is sponsored yearly by the Human Genome Research Institute, invites individuals to understand more about the science which renders them genetically distinct.

History Of National DNA Day
It was during the year 1953, on the date of 25th April, when molecular biologist James Dewey Watson did something revolutionary his academic paper got published in a scientific journal themed on the double helix structure of the DNA. The paper was co-authored with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins. They got Nobel Prize in physiology 9 years later since their research shed light on the molecular structure of Nucleic Acids and how it has impacted the genetic information transfer among living creatures. They truly deserved the prize!
The Human Genome Initiative, a global scientific research initiative designed to determine all genes in the human genome as well as define the base pairs which constitute the human DNA, was proclaimed on April 14, 2003. The US government sponsored the initiative, which spanned thirteen years and was finished 2 years prior to the stipulated time. It started out with the goal of tracing the nucleotides in a human haploid genome, and yet researchers soon discovered that every person’s genome is entirely unique, therefore mapping the human genome required modeling the DNA of a small percentage of individuals and afterward putting the pieces in a combined manner to form a comprehensive pattern for every individual chromosome. As a result, the human genome is much more of a mosaic than a whole genome.
Upon the materializing of the Human Genome Project, the Senate and House of Representatives declared April 25, 2003, to be celebrated as DNA Day and April to be Human Genome Month. The day celebrated the 50th anniversary of Watson, Crick, and Wilkins’ scholarly publication, and the month was notable in genome research. They did, nevertheless, make it a one-time event instead of an annual event. From then onwards, the National Human Genome Research Institute has organized National DNA Day programs and festivities to promote more studies and to recognize and honor every one of the tremendous efforts put into the study of DNA.
