History Of National Arbor Day

Sterling Morton, who was a Nebraska newspaper editor and citizen of Nebraska City, NE, used to be a big fan of trees and passionately campaigned for people and civic groups to install them. When he became Secretary of the Nebraska Territory, he was able to disseminate his message about the importance of trees even further. At a session of the State Board of Agriculture on January 4, 1872, Morton suggested the first “Arbor Day” tree-planting holiday. The date for the event was decided for the date of April 10, 1872.

Prizes were distributed to counties and individuals who had the most appropriately planted trees on that particular Arbor Day was officially declared by Nebraska’s Governor, Robert W. Furnas, during the year of 1874, and was commemorated on April 10 of that year. Arbor Day became a recognized state holiday throughout Nebraska around 1885, and April 22 was chosen as the occasion for its yearly celebration a day. On the first Arbor Day, it was projected that over 1 million trees were grown in Nebraska.
