History Of Jackie Robinson Day
On January 31, 1919, the infamous sharecropper Jack “Jackie” Roosevelt Robinson was birthed in Georgia to a family of sharecroppers. Following his father’s departure, his family relocated to California quickly. Segregation affected Robinson’s upbringing from his early years. He and his fellow African American companions were ostracized and restricted to their dwellings because of their ethnicity.
Robinson’s interest in sports started at John Muir High School when he was a student. As a result of the encouragement of his older brothers, Mark and Frank, he began to focus more on his physical ability. He inscribed in all four major high school sports, including football, basketball, and track, within months of starting high school. After winning numerous medals and certificates of achievement in a variety of sports, he finally settled on baseball.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the military in the coming years. Around 1944, he had a turning point in his life. Jackie declined to sit in the back of a divided military bus after one year of service. Charges were brought against him for his act of resistance, which resulted in a military trial. The event not only pulled him back to baseball after a brief absence, but it introduced him to the everlasting struggle for fairness and freedom for blacks that he has been engaged in ever since.
Having been discharged from the military with an honorable discharge, he began performing at state-level baseball with the Negro American League, which grabbed the attention of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey.
Rickey recruited Robinson to help him achieve his personal goal of being the first Black athlete to participate in Major League Baseball after the end of apartheid in the sport. Jackie was an enormous hit upon that field. His team won the tournament in 1949, and he was named M.V.P. for his efforts. Robinson was very aware of the significance of his influence on the aspirations of African American athletes and never shrugged it off. He viewed himself as a change agent and endured years of racial taunts, demagoguery, and physical assaults in order to prove his point.
The administration of the M.L.B. was more willing to encourage him because of his talent. Robinson realized that his sports career was just the beginning of his journey in life. After retiring, he promptly became involved in political activities and advocated a number of African-American concerns. Jackie Robinson Day was formally established by Major League Baseball in 2004 on April 14, the anniversary of Jackie’s debut.
How To Celebrate Jackie Robinson Day 2022?
Participate in baseball
Robinson was a lifelong baseball fan who stayed dedicated to the sport until his death in 2003. On April 15, hoist a bat in his memory and play a friendly baseball game with your pals and family in memory of him.
Speak out against inequalities.
Robinson was well aware of the ethnic issues which encompassed him and worked tirelessly to effect positive change in the world. “I am unable to stand and sing the national anthem,” he apparently wrote in his diary. I am unable to respect the flag because I am well aware that I am a black guy in a white society.”
Take a look at the film “42.”
“42,” a documentary that was released in 2013, is a must-see for baseball and Robinson enthusiasts alike. The film portrays the entirety of Robinson’s hardship and victory — and the great Chadwick Boseman does an excellent job portraying Robinson in the role.

Why Jackie Robinson Day Is Important
Because he was the first African-American to play in the Major League Baseball, Robinson was the first to face a barrage of racist taunts. This first home run was met with a snub from his mates. Robinson, on the other hand, embodies the strength it needs to transcend racial animus and bias. Robinson seized control of the game as soon as he took the field. For six league championships and one World Series crown, he was the team’s manager.
A yearly day of commemoration is warranted for his easy striking approach and relentless desire to be the best. In Robinson’s rags-to-riches tale, we can learn a thing or two. He overcame incredible obstacles to being one of the wealthiest and most well-known Black Americans of his moment by battling his way up from the bottom. We must celebrate this day to eradicate issues of racism and uphold human dignity by honoring this legendary man.
