When is the National Great American Smokeout 2023 USA?
Great American Smokeout is celebrated on the 3rd Thursday of each November. This year the Great American Smokeout 2023 falls on November 16.
History of Great American Smokeout:
The origin of Great American Smokeout happened due to an event organized in Randolph, Massachusetts in 1970. Arthur P. Mullaney, a high school guidance counselor helped people to start a life-transforming journey. He asked them to stop smoking for a full day and donate the cigarette money to the high school scholarship fund.
Years down the lane of 1974, Lynn R. Smith who was a newspaper editor prompted the state of Minnesota’s first D-Day or Don’t Smoke Day. The spark of the idea got caught on the radar of California Division’s American Cancer Society. They were able to gather 1 million people to quit smoking during the day of 18th November in 1976. It is now considered as the first official Great American Smokeout. Later in the year 1977- the American Cancer Society lead the frontier by taking the event across every state of the country.
This has revolutionary significance since people’s perception regarding the public view of tobacco advertising and usage changed dramatically. All thanks to the inception of the event- the chain reaction prompted many public and working places to create smoking-free zones for people who are trying to quit smoking as well as for non-smokers.
