Founder’s Day 2024 – Sunday, August 4! On August 4, Ghana marks its anniversary and commemorates its fight for independence on Founders’ Day. This wasn’t always the case; in the past, the holiday was known as “Founder’s Day” and honored Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a freedom fighter who went on to become the first president of independent Ghana. Dr. Nkrumah established the Ghanaian freedom movement along with 5 other members from a political party opposed to British rule. Today is the day when we get the chance to honor them!

History Of Founder’s Day
The quantity of gold discovered on these shores astounded the first European explorers to set foot on African soil. Trade arrived from all over the world, such as Portugal, England, Sweden, as well as other European nations, as a result of word spreading and the willingness of various African kingdoms to engage in trade. Due to its significant gold reserves, they gave this area the title “Gold Coast.”
Even by 19th century, Britain had inhabited most of this area, such as the territory of Ghana, whether it be through immediate seizure or buying. The Gold Coast people gained a wider perspective and a broader variety of skills as a result of being drafted into their colonial leader’s army during both the First and the Second World Wars, but they were unable to put these benefits to good use in their tightly regulated homeland.
Nationalists on the Gold Coast fought harder to increase regional autonomy as a result. J. B. Danquah, a politician and attorney, as well as other informed Africans like G. A. Grant and R. A. Awoonor-Williams, formed the United Gold Coast Convention, one of the most massive political parties on the Gold Coast, in an effort to achieve self-governance. They chose Kwame Nkrumah, a vociferous and radical African, to serve as the secretary-general of the U.G.C.C. Then, in 1948, 3 vets were shot dead by the British during one protest by World War II veterans against non-payment of end-of-service benefits. Six important leaders were detained as a result of the U.G.C.C.’s involvement: Dr. Nkrumah, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori Atta, and Ebenezer Ako-Adjei. The six men became extremely well-known as a result of their detainment, and they quickly took on the moniker “Bix Six.”
Eventually, Dr. Nkrumah would leave the U.G.C.C. and started his own political party, which aided him to becoming the initial prime minister of Ghana, which had only gained independence, and later its first president. Ghana first achieved independence in March 1957, and 3 years down the line, it became a republic. Every year on September 21, also known as “Founder’s Day,” Ghana commemorated this significant occasion and Dr Nkrumah’s birthday. The day was renamed “Founders’ Day” as the commemoration expanded to acknowledge the contributions of the other “Bix Six” members as well. In order to honor the day, the U.G.C.C. was established, and the schedule was also changed to August 4. On September 21, Ghana observes Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day as part of its ongoing commemoration of Dr. Nkrumah.
