August 1 is designated as Colorado Day each year. The holiday honors President Ulysses S. Grant’s signature on an Act of Congress that established Colorado as a state of the Union on August 1, 1876. Native American tribes had lived in the region and lasted for approximately 14,000 years before the Spanish began to colonize Colorado in 1598. Colorado Day became a legal holiday on August 1st, 1907, thanks to a law that the state legislature carried throughout March 1907.

History Of Colorado Day

Numerous Native American tribes, such as the Ancestral Puebloans, Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, Shoshone, and Ute nations, lived in Colorado around 14,000 years ago. The Spanish conquistadors made the first European contact; one of them, Juan de Onate, established the Spanish province of “Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico” on July 11, 1598. Once Colorado was incorporated into this province, the frequent trade between the Spanish settlers and the local Native Americans began to be referred to as “Comercio Comanchero,” or “Comanche Trade.”

The Spanish, who asserted sovereign rights over the region, disputed the United States’ territorial rights to the eastern Rocky Mountains during the year 1803. After prevailing in the war with Mexico in 1846, the United States was able to resolve the Southern Rocky Mountains. Nevertheless, because of the “Pikes Peak Gold Rush,” the resolution didn’t start in total seriousness until a couple of years down the line. Lewis Ralston, who unearthed gold on June 22, 1850, gave the stream the title “Ralston’s Creek” after he found it making its way into Clear Creek. The “Pikes Peak Gold Rush” started in 1857 when prospectors flocked to the area in large numbers to look for gold.

After passing 3 years, a population explosion resulted from the projected 100,000 people who had arrived in pursuit of gold. So, when gold ended up running out, they opted for silver, heavy rock gold, as well as other minerals instead. During the infamous Southern State’s secession that sparked the American Civil War, President James Buchanan approved an Act of Congress on February 28, 1861, making Colorado a U.S. territory. 28 days after the United States Centennial Celebration, on August 1, 1876, President Grant published a proclamation confessing Colorado as the 38th State to the Union, giving the state the nickname “Centennial State.” The first “Colorado Day” was observed in 1907.
