History Of Cesar Chavez Day
Cesar Estrada Chavez was brought up in Yuma, Arizona, and was born on March 31, 1927, to a Mexican-American family. He grew up on a farm with his mother, who worked part-time as a worker. As the United States struggled to recover from the Great Depression in the late 1930s, Chavez’s family’s home was foreclosed on. His family, now nomads in their own homeland, relocated to California in quest of work. Chavez was severely impacted by the exodus, and he quickly left school and started working the land. He enlisted in the navy around 1946 and worked for 2 years. He returned to farm work following his release, hitched, and lived in California.
Chavez began to doubt the logic of his dearth of collected riches after years of hard labor and devotion after experiencing a lifestyle of insecurity, low pay, and no property. In search of solutions, he embarked on a grassroots organizing journey. Around 1952, he joined the Community Service Organization, a Latino civil rights organization (C.S.O.). Chavez fought racial and class discrimination for the remaining ten years of his life. He urged individuals in his community to engage in democracy by organizing hundreds of voter outreach. He later rose through the ranks of C.S.O. to become the national director.
During 1962, after a disagreement inside the organization, Chavez departed and partnered up with Dolores Huerta. They formed the National Farm Workers Association jointly. During the rest of his life het involved himself in protesting, striking, and engaging in labor revolutions all around the country. He staged hundreds of sit-in demonstrations and hunger strikes, motivated by Gandhi’s peaceful teachings. In 1993, Cesar Chavez died. During that year, President Bill Clinton presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he received posthumously. He has been an inspiration for human rights advocates around the world and is a heroic figure to millions of Americans years following his death.
